How can you tell the difference between a peregrine falcon and a hawk?

I've been seeing a red tailed hawk in the neighborhood for several years. Last evening, neighbors and I saw three birds who were squawking in a tall tree. Since our town has nesting peregrines each year, how would I know the difference?
